Gumara Tribe

A History of Tribes and more things...

Gumara is a tribe originating from North Africa that lived on the island of Mallorca during the 10th – 12th centuries AD.

That’s 1000 years before we, Esther and Ángel GUMARA CAMPER MALLORCA, set our feet for the first time on the island.

Upon our arrival on the island, one of the things that caught our attention the most is the cultural mix that has remained after the passage of different peoples through the island. This mix is easy to see on a simple walk through the streets of the capital, Palma. Here we find fascinating architecture.

The Gumara proudly called themselves the Amazigh (the free people), a term that was gradually replaced by the common Berber, from the Greek Barbaria, not so pretty or exact.

The only trace of their presence on the island is found in the Towers of Gumara which can be found in Palma. They were one of the access doors to the Temple of Madina Mayurqa (Palma de Mallorca).

It is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Palma and, without a doubt, one of the worst preserved. Hopefully one day the city will recover that part of its history and we will discover more about the ancient Almudaina de Gumara.

From here we offer a small tribute to a free town and we fantasize in our imagination with its exciting trips and expeditions around the island of Mallorca.

What better way to emulate those ancient trips than with one of our camper vans in Mallorca.

Mallorca, Majorca or Madina Mayurqa, a beautiful piece of land in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea that has been seducing free men and women from all over the world for thousands of years.

We do not want to lose that nomadic character that one day, many years ago, conquered a part of the island. And we think it’s a great idea to remember these old inhabitants on one of our CAMPER VAN ROUTES ACROSS MALLORCA.
